Opening Doors for LGBTQ Youth in Foster Care: A Guide for Lawyers and Judges

This guide was created out of the need to educate and inform lawyers and judges on how to work best with their LGBTQ clients who are in foster care.

Research has shown that 70% of youth in group homes reported violence based on LGBTQ status and 30% reported physical violence by their families after coming out.

The reality is the statistics and stories are mostly grim for LGBTQ youth in foster care. Lawyers and Judges can help change these statistics. Learn about your role in protecting LGBTQ youth, examine your own views and beliefs, build strong client relationships, improve your legal advocacy and decision making, and use resources that are provided.
