The Benefits of Extracurricular Activities for Youth and Alumni of Foster Care

Extracurricular activities, like after school sports, band, clubs, etc., are sometimes viewed as a luxury for students in foster care. 

This article, accessible through the Texas Education Agency and published by the National Center for Youth Law, extolls the benefits of youth participation in extracurricular activities.

Outside of California, most states do not have policy supporting youth's involvement in extracurricular activities.  Students are limited to the schedules of caregivers . 

Research shows that involvement with these activities has positive impact on:

  • Attendance
  • Motivation
  • Academic achievement
  • Behavior
