The U.S. Department of Education (ED) aims to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

Created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies, ED now employs some 4,400 people and has a budget of $68 billion. With this budget, ED strives to:

- Establish policies on federal financial aid for education while distributing and monitoring those funds.
- Collect data on America's schools and disseminate research.
- Focus national attention on key educational issues.
- Prohibit discrimination while ensuring equal access to education.
